Finnsheep

$0 of $5,000 raised

We propose to purchase a flock of 12 to 20 Finnsheep to research their suitability for land management, and produce meat, wool, milk, on minimal off-farm inputs.

Finnsheep are a multipurpose breed, like Icelandics. The factor that decided us on Finns over Icelandics (which we’ve had previously) is their prolificacy and more lustrous wool. Triplets and larger order multiples are not unusual. This makes it possible to increase a flock fairly quickly, ensuring a quick turnaround for meat and wool. Ewes produce plenty of milk for specialty dairy products – liquid milk, cheeses, yoghurt, skyr, and even butter. They produce milk with twice the butterfat of cows. Because they are a primitive breed of sheep – like Icelandics and Shetlands – they are happy with a mix of pasture and browse. This is useful in minimizing (or eliminating) the need for off farm feed inputs.
